A Young Male Requires Therapy For His Extreme Depression, Relationship Problems, And For His Alcohol And Drug Dependency

Nearly three months ago I had dinner with a thirty-seven-year-old man named Benjamin who suffers from acute depression, has relationship difficulties, and who is alcohol and drug dependent. As explained by Benjamin, it is his alcohol and drug dependency and his acute depression that has had the most to do with his continual relationship problems.

As stated by Benjamin, he is so overcome by his relationship problems and by both of his medical issues that he basically has little or no driving force to achieve much of anything. What is particularly unfortunate about this is that earlier in his life, Benjamin finished one semester of grad school in sports history.

Benjamin's circumstance makes me wonder if he is an illustration of an individual who can look within and see his drug addiction and drinking problems and do something healthy about these problems. Or, conversely, if he a person who has to hit the bottom of the barrel before he gets drug and alcohol rehabilitation that results in lasting sobriety.

It may be asked how rehabilitation would help his drug and alcohol addiction. For starters, there are more than a few recently created physician-prescribed drugs that can help Benjamin avoid an alcohol or a drug relapse, help him through the drug and alcohol detox process, and help him through his withdrawal symptoms. Second, in rehab he could also learn more about his alcoholism symptoms and also about the various stages of alcoholism.

Third, Benjamin would learn to accept the fact that there is absolutely nothing helpful about drug addiction and excessive and abusive drinking. In a similar way, he would also learn that engaging in one or both of these unhealthy situations is the road to poor work and school performance, legal problems, shattered relationships, deteriorating health, financial difficulties, and a premature death. Fourth, counseling for his depression and for his relationship issues might help him cope with these mental health problems more effectively and possibly create less of a need for him to engage in additive behavior. And finally, in therapy he could also learn more about the diverse symptoms of alcoholism that he has displayed.

Since Benjamin lacks the resolve to achieve much of anything in his life, it is evident that he definitely needs a little hope for a more productive existence. And the sad thing is that hope is all around Benjamin if he could only get to the point in life to get the counseling he requires for his severe depression and drug addiction and alcoholism and continue with his treatment program.

Benjamin is clearly too young to be beaten in life. He doesn't understand this right now but if he can learn how to abstain from drugs and alcohol via alcohol and drug therapy and get the counseling he requires for his extreme depression, he can turn his life around and start living with direction, self-respect, and passion.

Stronger relationships, a wonderful life, self respect, and beneficial change are clearly a reality for Benjamin. But only if he can become inspired to get the medical treatment he requires, follow through with his therapy regimen, live his life in an alcohol and drug-free and healthy way, and learn how to acquire a more positive attitude about life.
