Tiny Breed Dog Training
Why dog lovers hold this preconceived belief that small breed pups are more challenging to train than medium sized or large breed puppies, I will never be able to figure out. Housebreaking a puppy, no matter what its size should never be difficult.
Small dog training, is no different from training a puppy dog of any other larger sized breed. Although training any dog will have its peculiarities, according to its breed, almost all other facets remain exactly the same, and the method to training the puppy should be the same, not withstanding its size.
However, I will stray from the rule here, and accept that small dog training may create complications in two aspects, (1) Aggression and (2) Puppy crate training. Nonetheless, this is not because the size of the dog breed is small, but in all case studies, because of the owner.
If a smaller breed dog is aggressive and is hard to train, or if a small breed dog cannot be crate trained or poses complications in being bathroom trained, it is the owner who has not knowingly contributed to this dilemma. Let us analyze how and why.
Aggression.
Smaller dogs are enjoyed because they are cute, they are like toy characters. Owners delight in having their dog sit on their laps. This kind of indulgence is where the trouble gets going. The basic aggressive nature of the puppy, is to claim ownership over its space, its food, even its trainer; all dogs need to be the alpha dog.
It is the aggressive streak in the pup that provokes it to get on to the lap of its mistress, above all when there are plenty of humans present in the room.
This is a obvious act of aggression. Instead of reprimanding the pup, every owner with the exception of no one, would hug the dog, even though it jumped on to their lap without being called, encouraging the aggressive streak in the pup. As a result the owner has seconded the pup's inherent need to be the alpha dog.
Growling and getting upset at a a bigger size dog is another obvious act of violence. To the owner, and even the people around, this is seen as cute, because one dog is very small while the other is large. Most owners praise the pup instead of admonishing it, when it exhibits this aggression with a larger dog.
The above mentioned are but illustrations as to why small pups are aggressive, and not because small dog training is problematic.
Potty Training.
Owners are inclined to lug their small pups around no matter where they go, even when they are in the house and that makes it plain difficult to toilet train them
It is, as if by instinct that the owners of small breed dogs to lug the animal to the area where the pup should go to the toilet and then cart it back into the house.
It is this practice of carrying the dog to the place where is should do its business that is the root of all problems. In addition, ever since the pup is as a general rule carried around so often it has no way of it telling or cautioning the owner that it has to make its business.
Small dog training begins with treating the dog as any other sized dog. They have to be shown their potty area on a leash. If owners discontinue carrying their miniature breed dogs they would have no obstacles in training them.
Dog crate training, is the most important part of canine training, and so it has to be, even in Small Dog Training.
