Youth Alcohol Abuse, The Link Between Coping Skills And Excessive Drinking, And The Necessity For Coping Skills Training
Recent teenage alcohol abuse statistics reveal that alcohol abuse among teens is increasing in the United States. What are some of the reasons for this? Numerous alcohol addiction consultants affirm that liquor, wine, and beer advertisements brought into being by the media are a fundamental reason for the escalation of teen alcohol abuse.
Other alcoholism authorities state that the increase in youth alcohol abuse is due to the toleration and ease of access of alcohol. Still other alcohol addiction consultants affirm that numerous adolescents involve themselves in injurious drinking due to the increased apprehension that they experience.
From a slightly different outlook, since both parents in a number of families work full or part-time, the lack of parental guidance indubitably has to play an important role in the increase in adolescent alcohol abuse. And as a final point, diverse alcoholism specialists believe that the escalation of youth alcohol abuse is due, in some way, to our permissive society.
One feature of adolescent alcohol abuse that looks as if it poorly reported in the chemical dependency research findings, in contrast, is the scarcity of educational courses that teach students how to augment their coping skills so that their unhealthy and abusive drinking behavior is radically decreased or exterminated. More to the point, scientific research has uncovered the fact that there is an indirect connection between poor coping skills and hazardous drinking.
In effect, this means that the worse the coping skills, the greater the frequency of alcohol abuse. To the degree that this is a valid affirmation, why isn't coping skills instruction a major part of the academic prospectus in all of our junior high schools, elementary schools, and high schools?
Let us manufacture a scenario for explanatory purposes. Let us imagine a society in which all individuals are taught how to achieve outstanding coping skills all the way from kindergarten up to and including their senior year in high school. In such a society, when life gets challenging, people who are "coping skills experts" will be able to respond in a more healthy and more successful way, contrary to others who fail to execute their coping skills.
More explicitly, students who show evidence of solid coping skills will be more able to think clearly and exhibit top-shelf decision making as opposed to teenagers who, because they were unsuccessful in their attempts to implement quality coping skills, resort to the "quick fix" of careless and abusive drinking.
What would happen in the above "ideal" society, what's more, if students not only got top shelf coping skills instruction but also got an extraordinary education that outlined the long term and short term devastating outcomes associated with drug abuse and alcohol abuse? Emphasizing these types of teenage alcohol and drug abuse facts, along with more highly developed coping skills instruction, it is declared, would help adolescents stay away from the noticeable appeal correlated with adolescent drinking and, as a result, would notably lessen the injurious drinking behavior shown by the youth in our country.
There are obviously scores of sound reasons why so many of our adolescents abuse alcohol. Such a knotty subject demands a broad based and more pertinent response by our politicians, parents, educators, and students so that our adolescents can learn how to cope with life's predicaments in a more rewarding and accountable way instead of gravitating to careless and abusive drinking to solve their problems.
